International Walk to School Day
Schools across Greenville County are celebrating International Walk to School Day. This event has become part of a movement for year-round safe routes to school by encouraging children and parents to walk or bike to school.
Last year the Stone Academy PTA created Walk to School Wednesday to provide the opportunity for all students, including magnet students, to walk to school, explained parent Caroline Fritz. “The idea is a “walking school bus” that gives parents of magnet students the opportunity to drop their child off at one of four walking routes. Parent leaders who have received safety awareness training walk to school with students every Wednesday,” she said.
Greenville City Councilwoman Amy Ryberg Doyle joined students and parents today for International Walk to School Day. “We at the city are committed to building more sidewalks and crosswalks for safer school transportation,” she said. “Our school zones are so important to us and we are going to continue to work on safe streets and providing the police department with the support they need to enforce school zones.”
