Greenville County Schools’ Food and Nutrition Services announces $100,000 grant
The Food and Nutrition Services of Greenville County Schools has received a $100,000 grant for ongoing culinary and nutrition training initiatives to support the Culinary Creations program. The support is being made possible in part by a grant from Greenville Women Giving.
Culinary Creations is a menu concept that emphasizes scratch cooking in lieu of processed foods and promotes the consumption of whole grains and fruits and vegetables.
Four entrees are offered daily, and two are vegetarian choices. Each school has a Vegetation Station where students can choose items daily from the soup and salad bar. All soups are made from scratch.
More than 190 GCS food service employees have participated in the Culinary Creations training program in partnership with the Culinary Institute of the Carolinas at Greenville Technical College. This summer, an additional 160 employees will be trained.
Culinary Creations will be offered in all 51 elementary schools in the 2013-14 school year and 19 middle schools in 2014-15. All high schools will be part of the program within two years.
Culinary Creations was recognized in 2011 by the Physicians Committee on Responsible Medicine with a Golden Carrot Award for providing some of the healthiest school menus in the nation. Eileen Staples, Director of Food and Nutrition Services said, “We are excited about this very generous grant and proud of our program and Greenville Women Giving’s confidence in our ability to succeed.”
Greenville County Schools is the 47th largest school district in the nation with over 71,000 students. For more information, visit the Greenville County Schools website at www.greenville.k12.sc.us. Information is listed under the Food and Nutrition section.
