On Thursday, October 24, Greenville County Schools celebrated the groundbreaking of the new site for Northwest Middle School.

“Our students here today represent our wonderful student body, and we are so thankful for them,” said Northwest Middle Principal Daniel Greene. “When we talk about the future, we look at how we want to grow and best prepare our students. We are excited about this and plan to celebrate all of that growth together with our community.”

Slated to open in 2027, the 150,000-square-foot facility will serve 1,000 students.

The site is located off US Highway 25, at the intersection of Belvue Road and Robertson Road. Along with the school, it will feature a gymnasium with locker rooms, an athletic field with a track, tennis courts, and baseball and softball fields.

“It’s a momentous occasion as we officially break ground for our new building—a testament to our commitment to providing the best possible environment for our students to learn and grow,” said Dr. Carolyn Styles, Greenville County Schools Board of Trustees Chair and Area 17 Representative. “As we move forward with this project, let us remember that we are laying the foundation for future generations of learners. Together, we are building not just a new structure but a brighter future.”

“I want to offer a special thank you to our community members who came today,” said Greenville County Schools Board of Trustees Area 19 Representative Debbie Bush. “It speaks so highly of this community, and your support and involvement is crucial to our success as we embark on this journey together.”

“This day symbolizes a bright future for students who live in this attendance area,” said Superintendent Dr. Burke Royster. “Today, we are celebrating not only an opportunity to build a physical structure but a new instructional structure to meet the current and future needs of Northwest students. Our Board of Trustees has been particularly supportive of the ongoing efforts for this project, and without their support and vision, we would not be here today.”

The current building for Northwest Middle School was constructed in 1973 and was renovated in 1988, 1990 and 1998. The school boasts award-winning fine arts programs and serves approximately 800 students. Most of the students at Northwest Middle come from Duncan Chapel Elementary, Gateway Elementary, Heritage Elementary and Slater-Marietta Elementary, and many will attend Travelers Rest High School.
