Simpsonville Elementary Named Leader in Me Lighthouse School

Simpsonville Elementary School has become the fourth school in Greenville County to be named a Leader in Me Lighthouse School for its student leadership programs inspired by Franklin Covey’s “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.” (Only Woodland, Mauldin and Taylors Elementary Schools have earned this coveted designation.)

“(We are) very proud to be recognized as a Leader in Me Lighthouse School.  We believe that every child can be a leader and every child has the opportunity to lead. Developing the whole child is not just teaching academics. It is going beyond that and teaching them skills they need to be successful long-term. By teaching the 7 Habits, we are able to prepare our students for College and Career Readiness,” said Simpsonville Elementary School principal Jackie Earle.

The book’s leadership principles have been adapted for young children and used to guide schools in developing Leader in Me educational programs. Simpsonville Elementary achieved Lighthouse status after being evaluated and approved by a review team from Franklin Covey Co.

The program incorporates ideas from a variety of sources on leadership, education and effective social and emotional interaction. Students set goals, track data and assume leadership roles.  Students become self-reliant, take initiative, plan ahead, set and track goals, do their homework, prioritize their time, manage their emotions, be considerate of others, express their viewpoints persuasively, resolve conflicts, find creative solutions, value differences and live balanced lives.
