Greenville County Schools broke ground Thursday on the new Bryson Middle School, a 168,000-square-foot, two-story school designed to serve 1,000 students and provide room for future growth.

The groundbreaking ceremony was held at the new school site, 905 Fairview Road in Simpsonville. The replacement Bryson Middle School is scheduled to open in 2028.

The new school will be built on a 74-acre site approximately 3.5 miles from the current Bryson Middle School and will feature 56 instructional spaces. The school is being designed to support project-based learning and team-based academics, with collaborative classrooms and multiple secure outdoor learning courtyards.

Special features will include a gymnatorium, dance studio, agriculture greenhouse, five collaborative classrooms, and extensive athletic facilities, including baseball and softball fields, an activity field and tennis/pickleball courts.

The school will have capacity for 1,000 students, with core facilities designed to serve as many as 1,200 students to accommodate future classroom expansion.

The design by Quackenbush Architects + Planners draws inspiration from the farming and agricultural architecture historically associated with the Simpsonville area while incorporating elements of the current Bryson Middle School to honor the school's history. Vannoy Construction is serving as the general contractor.

Greenville County Schools Superintendent Dr. Burke Royster, members of the GCS Board of Trustees, Bryson Middle School Principal Caroline Bohnenberger, students, faculty, staff and community members participated in the ceremony.
