GCS Students Outperform SC and Nation on SAT and ACT, Improve AP Passage Rate
Greenville County Schools’ students outperformed their state and national peers on the 2024 SAT and ACT standardized tests, and improved passage rates on Advanced Placement exams compared to 2023.
On the SAT test, the average score for GCS students was 1025, which is 30 points higher than the national average (995) and 17 points higher than the state average (1008). Seven schools—Riverside, J.L. Mann, Greenville, Mauldin, Wade Hampton, Eastside and Hillcrest—scored above the state and national average.
The Class of 2024 earned an average ACT composite score of 19.7 on the ACT’s 36-point scale. This exceeds both the state and national average composite scores. Statewide, public school students recorded an average composite score of 18.3, compared to a national average composite score of 19.4. The national score reflects both public and private school test-takers.
Seven GCS high schools exceeded the state and national average composite score on the ACT:
- Greenville – 22.3
- Riverside – 22.0
- Eastside – 21.2
- Wade Hampton – 21.1
- Mauldin – 20.9
- J.L. Mann – 20.5
- Hillcrest – 19.8
Three more GCS high schools exceeded the state average composite score on the ACT:
- Blue Ridge – 19.3
- Greer – 18.5
- Travelers Rest – 18.4
On AP exams in 2024, the passage rate (score of 3 or higher) for GCS was 69.2%, which is an increase of four percent over 2023. Mauldin High had the highest AP exam passage rate of 86%. Wade Hampton High had the second highest rate of 85%. J.L. Mann High Academy had the largest number of students taking AP exams (649). Greenville Senior High Academy had the largest number of AP exams taken (1,098).
