#Bethelight Campaign

On Wednesday, May 27, we plan to celebrate the Class of 2020 with a #bethelight campaign. High schools are scheduling drive-through events for seniors at their schools and all high school football stadium lights will burn for a period of time that evening. Here are some examples of what you can do to celebrate graduating seniors:
• Turn on your porch lights from 6- 10 p.m. on Wednesday, May 27 so seniors can see them while on their way to/from their drive-through celebrations
• Put sign/balloons/streamers in your front yard supporting the Class of 2020
• Decorate your mailbox with your high school’s colors and logos
• Wear your favorite high school colors on Wednesday, May 27
• Go to your front yard at 8:20 for 20 minutes on May 27 and wave your phone or a flashlight
• Send in pics of families under the lamplight or with yard signs/decorations to BetheLight@greenville.k12.sc.us.

Between June 1st and June 4th, we are asking that every student from Hughes Academy stop by the school to drop off chromebooks and chargers, library books, pay fines and fees, receive awards, pick up pre-ordered yearbooks, medications, instruments, and personal belongings. This process will be streamlined and safe, as we will follow all social distancing protocols. At the designated time, please pull through our car line where you will be directed by signage and members of our staff through this process.

Please make arrangements to drop by our school during the designated time. We are looking forward to seeing everyone briefly and saying our summer goodbyes.

And finally, Please join me in congratulating Mr. Morgan on his retirement and recent recognition by the Greenville County Schools' Board of Trustees who unanimously voted this week to have our gym officially named the "Kevin Morgan Gymnasium" in honor of his career. Mr. Morgan has served as assistant principal and athletic director for 28 years at Hughes Academy. If you'd like to drop by and congratulate him please join us on June 2nd from 4:30 - 5:30, when we will be hosting a "retirement parade" at the school. Gather up your family and take a quick drive through our bus loop that afternoon to show Mr. Morgan your love.

As always, thank you for your continued support.

Buenas tardes,

New Grading Policy

GCS has announced new grading procedures during the closure of schools due to COVID-19. In developing these guidelines, principals and focus groups of teachers from each school weighed in to create a fair and equitable grading system in this non-traditional learning environment. Grades will be based only on participation and engagement because we recognize that many of our students struggle to learn without direct in-person access to a teacher and have varying access to adult help and resources.

                                                                                                        New Policy

As you have already heard from our district, we have now developed plans for grading while we continue with eLearning. In accordance with policies set forth by the State Department of Education, all grades during eLearning will be given based on the participation of the students. We have asked teachers to take into account all types of engagement. This includes online interaction, virtual meeting times, assignment completion, and any other form of engagement that is displayed by students. Students will be given one grade per week, for each class in which they are enrolled for as long as we are conducting on-line instruction. This includes high school credit courses taught at the middle school level.
Due to the timeline and nature of the changes we are experiencing, final grades will be calculated differently than ever before. Rather than averaging third and fourth quarter grades together, to give a second semester final - our grades will be calculated by averaging the total points earned over the entire second semester. Essentially, it will be a running total from the start of the third quarter, through the end of the year (or as long as we experience school closures). This means that all participation grades will be weighted equally, and we will have no major assessments until we return to the school building. Our teachers have already started working on grading the participation of their students over the last few weeks of eLearning, and will continue to do so after spring break.
We know that this is a big adjustment for everyone. We believe that grading in this fashion provides our students, as whole, the most equitable system possible in this unprecedented time.
As a reminder, our teachers will begin teaching new material when we return from Spring break on April 20th. They will also begin offering regularly scheduled virtual meeting times so that they can have regular interactions with students. Please encourage your children to be present to as many of these meetings as possible, so they can stay connected and stay on track.
Paper packets that were distributed for the first few weeks of eLearning will count as participation as well. However, we have not received any direction about a safe way to do this just yet. If your child received a paper packet, please hold on to it until we are able to develop and communicate a plan for their return.

Tdap Vaccination Required to Enter 7th Grade

State law requires that all students have a Tdap vaccination to begin school their seventh grade year.  Students who have not been vaccinated cannot attend school and will not receive a schedule at orientation in August. Parents should contact their health care provider or the county Health Department (864-282-4100) to make arrangements as soon as convenient and provide a copy of the South Carolina Certificate of Immunization to the school. Copies can be mailed, faxed, or dropped off in person. Remember, this vaccination is required for all seventh grade students in order to begin school for the 2019-2020 school year.

Please contact the office with any questions at 864-355-6200.
