National Coaches Day

In October, we celebrate National Coaches Day, honoring the leaders who inspire us to work harder and do our best both on and off the field, court, mat, or track. Across the country, in every community, coaches organize teams, plan practices and training, and motivate athletes to strive to be the best they can be. At the same time, coaches pinpoint areas for improvement and supply guidance. They celebrate successes and provide support in challenging times.

Here at Greenville County Schools, we field 616 athletic teams in 23 sports. There are more than 1,200 coaches guiding over 11,000 student-athletes. While we have won many state championships and other honors, a statistic of which I am particularly proud is our District-wide combined Varsity GPA of 3.90.

In a competitive arena, coaches always desire to win, but the ultimate goal is to build character and discipline, set high standards, develop a strong work ethic, work toward shared goals, and put the team ahead of the individual.  Our coaches share these vital lessons every day, and our student-athletes will carry them throughout their lifetimes.

Coaches are leaders, mentors, and inspirers. Today, I thank them for time and energy they invest in the student-athletes of Greenville County Schools. They make a huge difference in their lives. I also hope all of you reading this will take a moment to thank or celebrate a coach or advisor who has inspired you on your journey to where you are today.

In gratitude,

W. Burke Royster PhD
Superintendent
