May Book of the Month

This month we will explore the house of Integrity in the book: The Empty Pot written by Demi. The house of Integrity is focused on having the inner strength to be truthful and trustworthy, acting justly and honorably, and making your actions match your words, even when no one is around. In the story The Empty Pot, the main character, Ping is challenged with the inner choice to be honest and risk losing the Emperorship, or find another way to grow the flowers. What will Ping decide to do?

Book summary: The Empty Pot tells a story about Ping, a young boy who grew the most beautiful flowers in China. When the Emperor decided that whoever could grow the biggest, most beautiful flower, would succeed him to the throne, Ping was sure that he would become Emperor. However, when Ping is unable to grow a flower with the seed that he received, his integrity stands to be tested. Will Ping’s honesty be rewarded, or will another child be chosen as the new Emperor?

Homelink Activity: Explore planting seeds with your family. Where is a good spot to plant them? What will you plant? What do seeds need in order to grow? What did you plant with your family? Keep a journal of your process and the progress. Let your teacher know if your seeds sprout!
