News GCS Middle Schools to Return to 5-day In-person Instruction Beginning next week, Greenville County Schools will start the process of returning middle school students to full-time in-person instruction. After consulting with medical professionals from DHEC and Prisma Health and reviewing our internal metrics, we believe GCS students and staff are safer from COVID-19 while at school than they are outside of school. We also recognize that students perform better academically in a face-to-face setting. Thankfully, GCS has received updated guidance on the use of plexiglass panels in classrooms. DHEC officials say students wearing masks can sit 3-feet apart instead of 6-feet while separated by a plexiglass barrier. It's important to understand that our decision to return middle school students to 5-day-a-week in-person instruction was not reached overnight. Read more about middle school returning. Heritage Elementary and Chandler Creek Elementary have both shifted focus to increase student achievement and test scores. As a result, their test scores have significantly improved the last two years. Both schools and communities desire to continue the focus on increasing test scores and academic rigor and have found that the requirements of the IB Primary Years Program detract from this focus. Both schools will continue to emphasize the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate. Waiver of Grade 5 and 8 MAP Testing for 2020-21 - Approved motion from the Committee of the Whole to waive MAP testing for grades 5 and 8 for the 20-21 school year.
