News

Kindergarten and First Grade Registration for 2020-21

Children who will be five years old on or before September 1 of the current year must enroll in public or private kindergarten unless the parent or legal guardian signs a waiver. Any child who will be six years old on or before September 1 of the current year must enroll in first grade.

Parents wishing to enroll new students for the 2020-21 school year should visit the enrollment information at the GCS website. Print and complete the enrollment forms and scan or photograph the required documentation. Once complete, please call the assigned school and leave a message with your phone number or email address. The appropriate individual will contact you with further directions for turning in the forms and completing the enrollment process.

Although we are not hosting a Job Fair this month, we are still hiring great people for positions as bus drivers, bus aides, custodians, and food service personnel! Full and part-time positions are available. We offer great benefits, including health and dental, retirement, sick leave, and free life insurance for employees who work 30 or more hours per week.

Student eLearning Calendar

May 1 – June 4, 2020

Per Governor Henry McMaster's orders, students will continue eLearning through the end of the school year. Teachers are providing lessons for students via Google Classroom throughout the closure. Teachers have their regular class schedule and contact information, including email address and classroom phone number, posted on their websites. If a student has questions and does not have internet access, he or she may call the teacher work phone during the teacher's regular class schedule. eLearning days for May and June are listed below. Please note Monday, May 25 is Memorial Day and a student holiday. The last day of eLearning is Friday, May 29. June 1-4 are days designated to make up missing work and return materials and/or pick up materials from school. Click here for daily schedule.

Superintendent's Report
Dr. Royster shared an update on eLearning, the close out of this school year, preparations for next year, student connectivity, and free meal distribution, among other things.

Action Items

Naming of Hughes Academy Gymnasium – Approved recommendation from the Administration to approve the naming of the Hughes Academy gymnasium for Mr. Kevin Morgan. The Hughes Academy community has expressed strong support for honoring retiring Assistant Principal and former Athletic Director Kevin Morgan, who has served the school with distinction for 27 years.

PE Exemption (Executive Session) – Approved recommendation from the Administration to approve a physical education exemption for one student at Riverside Middle School.

Champion for Public Education Nomination: Operation Santa SC – Approved motion from the Committee of the Whole to approve the nomination of Operation Santa SC for the SCSBA's Champions for Public Education Award. The nomination is based on the support the organization provides to Greenville County Schools students and families with necessities each year at Christmas. In 2019, the group served 850 children at 16 GCS elementary schools.

Recommendations from the Ad Hoc Committee for Internal Auditing – Approved recommendations from the Ad Hoc Committee for Internal Auditing to accept the recommendations of the Ad Hoc Committee for Internal Auditing as presented, instituting a hybrid internal auditing program beginning in FY 21.

Advocacy Resolutions – Approved recommendation from the Advocacy Committee to endorse two resolutions regarding flexibility on federal mandates regarding testing and reporting, and IDEA and state support of local communities.

Temporary Procedures for Public Input to Board Meetings – Approved recommendation to approve the temporary alternative for public participation during the Governor's current State of Emergency and any subsequent State of Emergency pertaining to the COVID-19 Pandemic as presented.

Consistent with Board Policy KCA, the Board of Trustees has created a temporary alternative for public participation during the Governor's current State of Emergency and any subsequent State of Emergency pertaining to the COVID-19 Pandemic that will allow the public to communicate their comments while also adhering to safety and health precautions and legal requirements.

In accordance with Board Policy BBC, this agenda item is being brought directly to the Board without going through the Committee of the Whole as it does not directly affect the operation, administration, or direction of the school district.

A. Process for the Public to Submit Comments

  1. Members of the Public are to submit their comments by sending an email that includes those comments to (email address to be established).
  2. That email must contain the name of the person submitting the comments and the address and phone number of that individual, giving the District the ability to verify the sender if needed.
  3. The comments must adhere to applicable General Rules contained in Section III in Board Policy KCA.
  4. The comments must be received by the District no later than 24 hours before the board meeting.

B. Process for the Board of Trustees to Accept Comments

  1. The Board's Leadership Team will review the submitted comments to ensure the comments are in compliance with these procedures and Board Policy KCA.
  2. If the submitted comments do not meet the requirements, the individual who submitted the comments will be provided, to the extent reasonably possible, time to correct any deficiency. If the submitted comments meet the requirements, those comments will be entered into the record as part of the consent agenda.
  3. The Board will vote to adopt those comments as part of the consent agenda and to include the comments as part of the official minutes of the board meeting.
  4. The comments, with the individual's address, email, and phone number removed, will be entered into the minutes.

Property Acquisition for Taylors Elementary School – Approved recommendation from the Administration to approve the purchase of 3.592 acres to support traffic flow improvements at Taylors Elementary School. Purchasing this property will provide necessary acreage for additional on-site car stacking. The property is located at 805 Reid School Road, Taylors – Greenville County Tax Map T029.02-01-011.00 and T029.02-01-012.00.

Renewable Water Resources (ReWa) Permanent Right-of-Way at Hillcrest High School - Pump Station Elimination Sewer – Approved recommendation from the Administration to approve the permanent right-of-way at Hillcrest High School as requested by ReWa. Renewable Water Resources (ReWa) is requesting a permanent right-of-way (R/W) at Hillcrest High School to connect existing infrastructure to a new gravity sewer line and take the existing lift station out of service, returning the existing R/W back to the school district.

Board Officers Candidate Roster – This item is for information only. In accordance with Board Policy BBAA, the Secretary presents the final roster of candidates for Board officer positions for the period July 1, 2020-June 30, 2021. The election is scheduled to take place at the regular June Board meeting.
