GCS Board Approves FY 20 General Fund Budget

Budget features $40,000 starting teacher pay, smaller elementary class sizes, and daily planning for teachers

The Greenville County Schools Board of Trustees approved the administration’s recommended FY 20 General Fund Budget in a unanimous vote at a Special Called Board Meeting. The recommended budget reflects revenue and expenditures totaling $668.4 million and makes Greenville County Schools one of the first, if not the first district in South Carolina to raise starting teacher salaries to $40,000. BMW Charity Pro-Am PosterBMW Charity Pro-Am Tournament

Roper Mountain Science Center has been chosen as one of the featured charities of the BMW Charity Pro-Am tournament, taking place June 6-9 at Thornblade Club and The Cliffs Valley. As one of the featured charities, Roper Mountain will receive the entire proceeds from ticket sales, one-half of the proceeds from the volunteer registration fees for those who volunteer and choose Roper Mountain as their beneficiary, and the proceeds from anyone who donates to Birdies for Charity. Michelin Youth Apprenticeship for GCS Students Nationally Certified

Michelin Youth Apprenticeship groupGreenville County Schools’ Partner of the Year, Michelin, was honored by the U.S. Department of Labor for its Youth Apprenticeship program. The program exposes high school students to advanced manufacturing careers. Now in its second year, the apprenticeship achieved national certification during a signing event in Washington D.C. hosted by U.S. Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta. Michelin’s Youth Apprenticeship program was launched in 2018 with five students from Golden Strip Career Center who expressed interest and aptitude in mechatronics. This hands-on learning experience provides a minimum of 2,000 paid hours of on-the-job training with a Michelin mentor in a Michelin manufacturing facility. Six GCS seniors have achieved perfect attendance throughout their entire academic career and have been recognized by the state.

Welcome, Prayer and Pledge of Allegiance - The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Gabriel Hugh Halkett, a fifth grade student at Crestview Elementary in Mrs. Gay's Class. Gabriel's passion is soccer. He has played with the Carolina Football Club for seven years. He aspires to play soccer professionally as an adult, and if that does not happen, he would like to share his love of the sport as a soccer coach.

Action Items

J.E. Sirrine Scholarship Award Recipients – Approved recommendation from the Administration to approve the new and renewal scholars for Sirrine Scholarships in the amounts specified by the Sirrine Scholarship Program Report.

Revision to Policy GBRI: Personal Leaves and Absences – Approved motion from the Committee of the Whole to approve the proposed revision to Board Policy GBRI with the effective date of July 1, 2019. The ad hoc Committee for Personnel Policies reviewed Greenville County Schools' policy on personal leave days and compared them to other districts in our state as well as peer districts in the Southeast, and recommended increasing flexibility for employees as detailed in the policy revision.

Committee / Liaison Reports

Derek Lewis reported that the Advocacy Committee will bring a resolution to the next Committee of the Whole meeting requesting school boards to participate in the PEBA Insurance system; the committee will review Senate Bill 419 and discuss possible changes; and the committee will encourage teacher advocacy, asking the Board to pass a resolution led by the Superintendent and Teacher Forum to promote voter registration.

Lisa Wells asked board members to provide suggestions for the SCSBA Training Conference.

Lynda Leventis-Wells reported that the Internal Auditor's Evaluation Ad Hoc Committee is working on the Internal Auditor's evaluation instrument and will have two documents for review at the next Committee of the Whole.
