News GCS Students Exceed State on SCPASS Science, Social Studies Greenville County Schools' students scored significantly higher than SC students on SCPASS (South Carolina Palmetto Assessment of State Standards). The SCPASS assessment measures student performance on the South Carolina Academic Standards in Science and Social Studies. Click for 'SCPASS' story. 20 GCS Seniors Named Semifinalists in 2019 National Merit® Scholarship Program Officials with the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced that 20 Greenville County Schools seniors are among 16,000 Semifinalists in the 64th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically talented students will compete for 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million that will be awarded next spring. To be considered for a National Merit Scholarship award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level. More than 90 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and about half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship. Click for 'National Merit' story. College Fair Postponed The Greenville County College Fair has been postponed to October 18-19 due to last week’s hurricane. Greenville County high school juniors and seniors will attend the annual Greenville County College Fair on Thursday, October 18 and Friday, October 19 at the TD Convention Center. Unofficial Board Meeting Summary Welcome, Prayer and Pledge of Allegiance Adoption of Consent Calendar Appearance of Visitors Superintendent's Report Action Items Addition to Board Legislative Priorities: Policies to Improve Teacher Recruitment and Retention Efforts Meeting - Approved recommendation from the Advocacy Committee to add to the Board's legislative priorities: "Explore policy changes to improve teacher recruitment and retention efforts." The addition of this position will allow the Advocacy Committee to devote time and energy into exploring policy changes that could assist in improving our District's teacher recruitment and retention efforts. Physical Education Exemptions (Executive Session) - Approved recommendation from the Administration to approve P.E. exemptions for one student from Travelers Rest High School and one student from Greenville High School. Review of Fuel Tank Distribution & Monitoring System - Approved recommendation from Internal Auditing Services to accept the audit of the Review of Fuel Tank Distribution & Monitoring System. The audit was performed to review the efficiency and effectiveness of the District's fuel process and monitoring system and evaluate the internal controls governing the fuel function. Internal Auditing Services' Project Status Report - The report was presented as information. Committee / Liaison Reports - Mrs. Bush reminded the Board about LiveWell Greenville's awards ceremony on October 4. Mrs. Wells reminded the Board about the Instructional Policies Committee Meeting on Tuesday, October 2. The Advocacy subcommittee on Security and Safety is also scheduled to meet on Wednesday, October 3. The meeting adjourned at 7:25 p.m. |
