The academic curriculum is both meaningful and appropriately challenging for all students. Academic challenges occur daily as teachers assign projects to show mastery of learning concepts. Students demonstrate autonomy in planning how to research and display information. With ongoing staff development, strategies for differentiating instruction are presented and shared at grade level meetings to ensure that teachers are meeting the learning needs of their students.
Formative common assessments provide data for the teachers to identify students’ learning needs and differentiate instruction. Common grade level planning provides collaboration for curricular decisions that address and support student needs. These strategies ensure that every student is valued and respected and every opportunity is given to assist each student to excel, regardless of the learning needs and cultural differences.
Modeling, guided practice, collaborative group work, independent practice, research, and writing across the curriculum are strategies used daily. Students work with their peers to create Class Mission Statements as well as set goals for the year. Celebrations are also conducted to highlight the accomplishments of students and their peers. Teachers also take advantage of staff development opportunities that are offered on-site, in the district, and through nearby universities.
