ACCESS for ELLS Testing

TestingDuring the timeframe of January 23 to February 21, 2025, we will be administering the ACCESS for ELLs test to all ESOL students. This test is an English language proficiency test that measures students’ academic English language skills. Testing helps teachers understand whether students have the language skills they need to fully participate in the classroom.

Your child’s teachers use ACCESS for ELLs test scores as they decide how best to teach your child. Test scores also help teachers track your child’s progress in learning academic English and help schools decide what English language support services to provide.

Your child does not need to study for ACCESS for ELLs. The test is an opportunity for students to demonstrate all the ways that they understand and can communicate in English. Prepare for test day by making sure your child gets plenty of sleep and eats breakfast.

Updated Electronic Device Policy

Cell Phones and Devices Off! Learning on!Due to legislative action by the SC General Assembly, effective January 7, 2025, all personal electronic devices, including cell phone and smartwatches, are prohibited during the school day. Mitchell Road already had a policy in place prohibiting cell phone use during the school day. This policy now include smartwatches, which should be left at home or stored in your student's backpack 7:45 am to 2:15 pm. Our School Handbook has been updated to reflect this change in policy. Please refer to page 4 of our Student Handbook.

Additional Information may be found on the GCS Website Cell Phone Policy Updates page.

Superintendent and Sheriff ask Parents for Help on Reporting of Social Media Threats

Superintendent and Sheriff ask Parents for Help on Reporting of Social Media ThreatsGCS Superintendent Dr. Burke Royster and Sheriff Hobart Lewis ask for parents’ help in ensuring effective reporting of potential threats. The Chiefs of the six local municipal police departments join in full support. We ask parents to monitor your child’s social media accounts closely, help control the spread of false threats and misinformation, and ensure effective reporting occurs. Having your child follow the See Something, Say Something protocols by reporting potential threats directly to the school or law enforcement will maximize the effective use of school and law enforcement resources and ultimately create a safer environment for all students.
