The Peaceful School Program

Lakeview Middle School has adopted the Peaceful School Program.

The purposes of the Peaceful School Program are:

  • Students work to create a sense of community and to establish freedom from hostilities and disorder.

  • Students learn the importance of making healthy choices and taking responsibility of their own actions.

  • As bystanders, students learn to encourage their peers to work through disagreements and to avoid fights.

The Peace Flag is a large part of the program.  Every morning, the flag is raised.  Every afternoon, the flag is lowered.  During the day, the flag will be lowered one notch anytime students Break the Peace.

The Peaceful School Program tries to persuade students to Come to an Understanding through peer mediation when they are willing to work through the following types of problems:  rumor and gossip, relationship difficulties, racial and cultural confrontations, cheating and stealing, vandalism, and more serious problems that require referrals.

The Peace Patrol makes the program successful.  The Peace Patrol is a group of peer mediators that facilitate the Coming to an Understanding process.  When students are involved in conflicts, a teacher or administrator asks the students if they are willing to Come to an Understanding.  If the students are willing, the teacher fills out a form and sends it to the front office.  Once the office has contacted a member of the Peace Patrol, they will call the disputants to the office where the mediation will take place.  After each mediation, the students who Came to an Understanding will fill out an evaluation of the mediation process.  After each Coming to an Understanding session, the appropriate Assistant Principal will write a positive referral to the participating students.

Breaking the Peace:

  • Breaking the Peace occurs when students who need to Come to an Understanding are UNWILLING.  It does not mean that students are having an argument.

  • When students Break the Peace, a teacher or administrator fills out a form and hands it to a students deemed responsible.

  • During the change of classes, the student will deliver the form to the front office.  The students will be asked to lower the flag one notch.

There are many positive consequences for Keeping the Peace.  One goal of the program is that bystanders work to create a peaceful climate.  They encourage their peers to work through disagreements and discourage them from Breaking the Peace.  As students work to Keep the Peace, they will receive positive consequences through their fourth period classes.

The Peace Bag is one of the positives.  It usually contains:

  • Homework pass

  • Seat of choice at lunch

  • Candy

  • Walk-n-talk

  • Food coupons

The fourth period classes that do not Break the Peace, will win a trip to Gattitown after each semester of Keeping the Peace.

Every month, a Peace Maker from each grade level will be nominated by the students.  The chosen students will be recognized by having their pictures displayed, and names printed in the newspaper.

While Preserving the Peace, students learn how to deal with harassment and bullying.  Through classroom activities and the use of software, faculty and students are taught how to identify bullying and harassment.  Preserving the Peace encourages students who bully to adopt new approaches in relating to other students.
