About the Patriot Battalion: 

Leadership potential is abundant while being a cadet. Cadets are placed in leadership positions as members of the staff that help to run the program. Cadets are challenged to think logically and to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. The importance of physical fitness is also stressed because of its importance in maintaining good health.J. L. Mann Academy is only one of 265 schools in the United States that have a High School Army JROTC Program. Army JROTC is a national program authorized by laws enacted by Congress and conducted by the Department of the Army in cooperation with Greenville County School District. The mission of the program is "To Motivate Young People to be Better Citizens." The purpose is to instill in student the values of citizenship, service to the community and to the United States, personal responsibility and a sense of accomplishment. The cadets develop appreciation of the ethical values and principle that underlie good citizenship which include integrity, responsibility, and respect for constituted authority.

The program is designed for physically fit citizens and nationals of the United States attending J. L. Mann Academy. It provides meaningful leadership instruction of benefit to the student and of value to the Nation. The cadets can participate in a variety of extra curricular activities with JROTC including the Raider Team, the Rifle Team, the Drill Team, and the Color Guard. The program is very active at the school and posts the National Colors at sporting events.

JROTC Leadership Education and Training 1 (LET-1)

Grades 9 -12

This course is designed for those students who desire to enhance their leadership and management abilities. The 180 hours of instruction are divided into American history, Military history, Citizenship, Leadership, Physical Fitness, First Aid, Health, Drug Abuse Prevention, Map Reading, Current Events and Contemporary subjects. Students will be issued a uniform and are required to wear it one day per week. Students are also required to maintain a neat appearance. The Reserve Officer’s Training Corps is organized under the authority of  the National Defense Act and was established at J. L. Mann High School in 1994. JROTC offers a special opportunity to combine basic military training with academic preparation. Through close coordination with retired officers and noncommissioned officers of the Army, your child will gain worthwhile information on the mission and organization of the Army and its all important role in the defense of our great nation. Select students will have an opportunity to
participate in a summer camp at the conclusion of LET - 1. The $10.00 fee for this course is a maintenance fee for the uniforms that are issued to the students entering JROTC and is not refundable.

Advanced Drill Techniques Grades 9 -12

This course is designed for those students who desire to enhance their drill and ceremony though an intensive course of instruction in advanced marching techniques. Drill in both group and individual setting help strengthen will, character, knowledge, coordination and skills as a leader in a group setting. The course will focus on individual drill with and without arms. It will cover stationary movements, different length steps and their relation to marching and facing. The course will review squad and platoon movement unique to each formation. Since this course should appeal principally to those with a desire to drill on the competitive level, considerable attention will be given to developing the mental skills required to be effective on that level. Students will have the opportunity to compete in both in state and out of state competitions if they can meet the rigorous demands to be at the top of the marching teams. Due to drill area size limitations, the course must be limited to 30 students. Prerequisites: Students in this course must be enrolled in JROTC and must have prior approval of the Army Instructor responsible for drill competitions.

Advanced Marksmanship Techniques Grades 9 -12

This course is designed for those students who desire to enhance their marksmanship skills though an intensive course of instruction in advanced marksmanship techniques. The course will focus on safe weapons handling techniques, the development of kills in the prone, kneeling, and standing firing positions, and a basic understanding of  weapons maintenance and repair. Since this course should appeal principally to those with a desire to fire on the competitive level, considerable attention will be given to developing the mental skills required to be effective on that level. Students will have the opportunity to fire both postal and shoulder to shoulder rifle matches. Due to size limitations, the course must be limited to 30 students.

Prerequisites: Students in this course must be enrolled in JROTC and must have prior approval of the Army Instructor responsible for drill and ceremony.

JROTC Leadership Education and Training 2 (LET-2)  

Grades 10 -12

This course is available only to students that have successfully completed  JROTC Leadership Education and Training 1 (LET - 1). It is designed for those students who desire to continue to enhance their leadership and management abilities. The 180 hours of instruction is a follow on to subject taught in LET -1 and teach the needed discipline to become a better citizen in society, the Bill of Rights, Civil Rights, Communism versus Democracy, Civilian career opportunities, Military career opportunities, Role of   Computers, Drill and Ceremony, Advanced Map Reading, CPR, How to give a speech, Cadet Challenge, Technique of communication, Leadership concentrating on values and good judgment, Team work, Drug Abuse Prevention, Technology Awareness and Automation, Current Events and Contemporary subjects. Students in LET 2 must fulfill certain learning outcomes that are expected of all LET-2 cadets worldwide. Selected students will have an opportunity to serve on the Staff of the JROTC Battalion in the positions of Non Commissioned Officers and Officers. Selected students will have an opportunity to participate in a one week Summer Camp with JROTC cadets from across America at no cost to parents at the conclusion of LET-2. The $10.00 fee for this course is a maintenance fee for the uniforms that are issued to the students entering JROTC and is not refundable.

JROTC Leadership Education and Training 3 (LET -3)

Grades 11 -12

This course is available only to students that have successfully completed JROTC Leadership Education and Training 1 and 2 (LET-1 and LET-2). It is designed for those students who desire to continue to enhance their leadership and management abilities in a disciplined environment. The 180 hours of instruction is a follow on to subject taught in LET-1 and LET-2. LET-3 continues to teach the needed discipline to become a better citizen in society. In addition to topics taught in LET-1 and LET-2 the program of instruction requires cadets to demonstrate proficiency in effective writing and reading, communication in front of large groups, demonstration of  leadership in situations, problem solving, decision making, Civilian career opportunities, Military career opportunities, Drill and Ceremony, Advanced Map Reading, Cadet Challenge, Team work, Drug Abuse Prevention, Technology Awareness and Automation, Current Events and Contemporary subjects. Students in LET 3 must fulfill certain learning outcomes that are expected of all LET-3 cadets worldwide. Selected students will have an opportunity to serve on the Staff of the JROTC Battalion in the positions of Non Commissioned Officers and Officers. Selected students will have an opportunity to participate in a one week Summer Camp with JROTC cadets from across America at no cost to parents at the conclusion of  LET-3. The $10.00 fee for this course is a maintenance fee for the uniforms that are issued to the students entering JROTC and is not refundable. Students will be required to maintain a neat appearance and to wear the military uniform one day per week.

JROTC Leadership Education and Training 4 (LET -4)

Grade 12

This course is available only to Seniors who have successfully completed JROTC Leadership Education and Training 1, 2, and 3 (LET-1, LET-2 and LET 3). It is designed for those students who desire to continue to enhance their leadership and management abilities and want to serve as alternate instructors for the LET 1 Students.The students must demonstrate the ability to study self-paced and to complete the exercises, case studies, and vignettes assigned within the time constraints established by the instructor staff. Students must demonstrate the ability to present and critique classroom materials and prepare lesson plans as assistant instructors, address a civilian or military audience on a subject of common knowledge within the JROTC program. Other topics that will be presented include civilian career opportunities, military career opportunities, Drill and Ceremony, current events and contemporary subjects. Students in Let 4 must fulfill certain learning outcomes that are expected of all LET-4 cadets worldwide. Selected students will have an opportunity to serve on the Staff of the JROTC Battalion in the positions of Non Commissioned Officers and Officers. The $10.00 fee for this course is a maintenance fee for the uniforms that are issued to the students entering JROTC and is nonrefundable. Students will be required to maintain a neat appearance and to wear the military uniform one day per week.
